about
This song was one of a few outtakes from "Home to Roam." Dan and I tracked it, but it was set aside as we cut down tracks to finish for the final record. I've always been fond of it though, and we've played it out quite a few times in the spring. In honor of this season's opening day, we dusted it off and finished the song for release.
As a lifelong baseball fan, there's nothing that signals spring more than hearing the crack of the bat on opening day. It's like fresh cut grass. Sit back, grab some peanuts and Cracker Jacks and enjoy the afternoon.
lyrics
Opening Day
It’s opening day, it’s time to play
Mothers and children gonna have to find a way
To make do while dad’s at the gate
Waiting in line to see the game
It’s the only time you pay $10 a beer
And never wonder once why you came here
You sit in the stands by somebody quite weird
But for one day everyone is each other’s peer
And everything’s alright with the world
Everything’s alright with the world
Everything’s alright with the world
Say hey hey
Optimism has yet to slide the slippery slope
Into mid-season when everybody knows
The manager’s gone and the team has choked
On opening day there’s every reason for hope
And everything’s alright with the world
Everything’s alright with the world
Everything’s alright with the world
Say hey hey
It’s opening day, it’s time to play
Mothers and children gonna have to find a way
To make do while dad’s at the gate
Waiting in line to see the game

A huge record for me. It helped me find a language to articulate what I wanted to say with my music. Bill is one of the best songwriters out there. You'll never be disappointed. Brent Stewart
